KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, IND.. (WOWO) A 24-year-old Goshen woman is facing investigation after police say a suspected drunk driving crash involving a horse-drawn buggy left five people injured in Kosciusko County Friday evening according to WSBT.
Crash reported on State Road 19
According to police, the crash occurred just after 7 p.m. on State Road 19 when a southbound vehicle driven by Jakaila Miracle struck the left rear corner of a horse-drawn buggy.
Authorities say the impact caused the buggy to leave the roadway, ejecting two passengers.
Multiple injuries reported
Police say five people were injured in the crash and transported to area hospitals.
Those injured include:
- The buggy driver and a 43-year-old passenger, both taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital
- A 41-year-old and a 15-year-old passenger who were ejected and also transported to Memorial Hospital
- A baby less than one month old, who was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital by medical helicopter
Officials have not released updates on the victims’ conditions.
Driver fled scene, later located
Investigators say the driver did not stop after the collision and was later observed traveling at a high rate of speed by a witness who alerted police.
Authorities located Miracle at the intersection of North 350 West and US-30.
Police say she was detained following the investigation.
Impairment suspected
Law enforcement officials said they suspect Miracle had been drinking prior to the crash.
A blood test was conducted, and results are pending as part of the ongoing investigation.
