1 Dead, Many Injured in Shooting at Suburban Party

CALUMET CITY, Ill. (AP) – A 19-year-old man has died and several were injured in a shooting at a house party in a south Chicago suburb.

Calumet City Police Chief Edward Gilmore said in a news release about 100 to 150 young people were in the basement early Sunday morning when a fight broke out and shots were fired.

Lake County, Indiana Coroner Merrille Frey said in a release that 19-year-old Dewayne Purnell of Burnham, Illinois died of gunshot wounds.

Gilmore said up to 10 people may have been injured and taken to area hospitals, but that most were not seriously injured.

The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation. He didn't provide a possible motive for the shooting.

Calumet City is about 20 miles south of Chicago near the Illinois-Indiana border.
