4 Vigo Co. Special Deputies Under Investigation

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) – Indiana State Police are investigating whether four special sheriff's deputies working traffic control at a Terre Haute event accepted cash from motorists for not reporting alleged infractions to the courts.

Police said Wednesday that the four Vigo County special deputies allegedly issued citations and then told the motorists they could pay cash on the spot instead of the infractions being submitted to court. Police say some of the victims chose the cash option, then reported what happened to other law enforcement officers.

Sheriff Greg Ewing told the Tribune-Star (http://bit.ly/1nF3ykF ) the four individuals under investigation worked for a Bloomington security company hired to provide security during last weekend's Scheid Diesel Extravaganza at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. They were given special deputy privileges to write tickets for violations such as spinning tires.
