MARION, IND. (AP): A worker at a General Motors plant in northeastern Indiana died after he was hit by a metal wall that toppled onto him when it was struck by a forklift, police said.

The Marion Police Department said Mark McKnight of Gas City died Wednesday morning at GM’s stamping and sheet metal plant in Marion, WANE-TV reported.

McKnight, 57, was working on an electrical conduit located near a floor-to-ceiling wall made of metal tubing welded together when another employee backed a forklift into the wall as it was being moved, police said, citing a GM official.

The wall, which was not secured to the floor or a connecting wall beam, then fell over and McKnight was unable to avoid being struck by it, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Grant County coroner, and an autopsy is pending.

Police said their investigation indicates that McKnight’s death at the plant was accidental.
