Fort Wayne, Ind. (WOWO) Indiana State Police are urging motorists to stay alert as deer mating season ramps up across the state. Last year, more than 17,000 crashes involved deer, resulting in nine fatalities. Police say the early morning and evening hours are especially risky, when deer are most active.

“Drivers should slow down if they see a deer, but never swerve,” said a spokesperson. “Brake firmly, stay in your lane, and always wear your seatbelt. A minor collision is far better than a major crash.”

With bucks and does darting across highways, authorities advise extra caution, especially in rural areas. Police remind everyone that deer are unpredictable and even a single misstep can turn deadly.
