Two Dunkirk Men in Critical after Exposure to Acid Fumes

DUNKIRKThe Blackford County Sheriff's Department says Robert Geiger and Richard Stanley, both 76, were working Monday on Geiger's well in Dunkirk when Geiger's wife found them unconscious in the home's enclosed well pit.

Chief Deputy Jeff Sones tells The Star Press Geiger and Stanley were exposed to acidic fumes for at least an hour after using about six gallons of muriatic acid to remove well corrosion. Both men were airlifted from the town about 50 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

Sones says both men remained in critical condition Wednesday, with Geiger at an Indianapolis hospital and Stanley at a Fort Wayne hospital.
