Ohio State Highway Patrol Warns Drivers as Peak Deer Season Brings More Crash Risks

COLUMBUS, OHIO (WOWO) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is warning motorists to watch for deer as November brings peak breeding season and an increased risk of collisions, particularly during morning and evening commutes.

The Patrol typically sees more deer-related crashes this time of year as deer become more active and the end of daylight-saving time puts more drivers on the roads around sunrise and sunset.

Governor Mike DeWine is urging motorists to slow down, watch the roadsides and avoid distractions.

“We know that deer activity typically increases at dawn and dusk, when visibility is low and many drivers are traveling to and from work,” DeWine said.

Ohio has recorded 111,359 deer-involved crashes since the beginning of 2021, according to Highway Patrol statistics. Those collisions included 49 fatal crashes, resulting in 50 deaths.

Motorcyclists face a particularly serious danger. Although motorcycles were involved in just 1% of deer-related crashes, they accounted for 82% of the fatal crashes.

The Patrol recommends that drivers watch for deer between sunset and sunrise, scan roadsides beyond the reach of their headlights and remain prepared to stop.

Troopers also emphasize one important rule if a collision becomes unavoidable: brake, but don’t swerve. Drivers should apply their brakes and remain in their lane rather than risk losing control or striking another vehicle while trying to avoid a deer.

Anyone involved in a collision should pull safely off the roadway and contact 911 or the nearest Highway Patrol post. Motorists should not approach an injured deer.

Patrol Superintendent Colonel Charles A. Jones says drivers can reduce their chances of a crash by slowing down, eliminating distractions and staying prepared for sudden stops.

Motorists can also call #677 to report a crash.
