Fort Wayne Mayor’s Office Requests Legacy Money For Winter Preparation

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): At Tuesday night's City Countil meeting, the Fort Wayne Mayor's Office proposed taking money from Legacy Funds, and use it for winter preparation.

Council members proposed transferring $2.2 million in Legacy money to Public Works and the City Street Deparment. That money can be used for salt trucks, repair, and driver overtime if Fort Wayne has a tough winter.

According to our partners in news at 21Alive, the city normally budgets $500,000 for winter maintenance, but last year's harsh winter had the city spending around $2 million.

Republican Councilman Russ Jehl says about $28 million of the Legacy has been given away within the last 20 months. By the end of 2014, he estimates about $41 million will remain.

Fort Wayne has already applied for state and federal disaster relief. If granted that money, the city would use it to reimburse Legacy funds. The council is planning to reconvene next Tuesday to discuss the issue.
