WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — An internal Purdue University investigation concluded the school could have prevented the former Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne chancellor's forced retirement from turning into an “ugly situation.”

Former IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell was forced to retire in 2011 at age 65 under a mandatory retirement age policy.

A recent settlement of Wartell's federal lawsuit against Purdue made public a 2012 report which found the university could have handled the enforcement of its retirement policy much better.

The Journal and Courier reports the investigation found that a top school official should have met with Wartell before any decision was made to explain to him that the “age 65 retirement policy would be enforced.”

But the report says Wartell instead received “a cold call out of the blue” informing him of the decision.
