INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Statewide hearings would have to be held on whether Indiana should keep a national set of reading and math education standards under a bill approved by the state Senate.
 
  Senators voted 38-11 on Thursday in favor of the bill that would also suspend implementation of Common Core State Standards until after the state Board of Education finishes a new review of the benchmarks it adopted in 2010. 
 
  Supporters of the new review say they don’t believe the benchmarks had enough public review and argue that the national initiative has led to a loss of local involvement over school standards.  
 
  The bill might not advance in the House, where the education committee chairman has said the Board of Education should make decisions on school standards.
