GPS System Helps Kokomo Schools Track Buses

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) _ A $60,000 GPS system is helping Kokomo school officials keep better tabs on their school buses.

Transportation director Larry Johnson says the system installed this summer allows school officials to get information quickly if a bus is late or has gone off route. It even shows the bus's speed and eliminates the need for transportation officials to call drivers on the radio and distract them while they are driving.

Kokomo decided to invest in the system after it began allowing students to choose which schools they attend. That forced the district to bus them all over the city and made bus routes more complicated.

The system will cost $25,000 a year to maintain, but Johnson says it's money well spent because it will make schools and drivers more accountable.
