Teacher Fired for Alleged Sexual Misconduct with a Student

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired says it has fired a teacher for alleged sexual misconduct with a student.

Superintendent James Durst of the school in Indianapolis said Friday that computer technology teacher Al Lovati had been fired two days earlier.

Durst says in a statement the dismissal followed an investigation by the State Personnel Department of an allegation of sexual misconduct made by a student on Tuesday. He says Indiana State Police have begun a criminal investigation.

Durst says, “We are deeply troubled by this allegation and are reviewing the policies and procedures we already have in place to ensure we provide our students with a safe and positive living and learning environment.''

A telephone message seeking comment was left at Lovati's home.
