INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A federal judge has set a June 1, 2015, trial date on the constitutionality of an Indiana law that would effectively shut down Lafayette's only abortion clinic.
The Indianapolis Star reports U.S. District Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson set the trial date this week. In November she issued a preliminary injunction blocking the law that was set to take effect Jan. 1.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is challenging rules passed by Republican lawmakers last year mandating that clinics that perform nonsurgical abortions by dispensing the abortion pill known as RU-486 meet the same standards as those that perform surgical abortions.
The law would effectively shut down the only abortion clinic in Lafayette by requiring that it add a recovery room, surgical equipment and other upgrades.
