Indiana Senate Leader Takes Over Marriage Amendment

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indiana Senate's leader is placing the proposed state constitutional ban on gay marriage with a committee he controls for vetting.

House lawmakers removed part of the amendment that would prohibit civil unions on Monday. But supporters of the ban have noted that approving the amended House version could push back a statewide referendum on the issue to 2016.

Long isn't saying whether he believes the civil unions provision should be restored by the Senate.
