LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): Federal cuts are forcing some Indiana homeless shelters to trim their hours.
Mental Health America in Lafayette and the Lafayette Transitional Housing Center lost a total of $65,000 in federal grants this month.
That's forced Mental Health America to reduce its winter hours from 13½ a day to 10 a day and to shorten its weekend operating hours. Spring and summer hours will see even bigger reductions.
The Journal & Courier reports Lafayette Transitional Housing Center is still weighing its options after losing $44,000 from its budget.
The funding cuts are a sign of shifting priorities in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD has funneled more dollars toward permanent housing programs and away from homeless shelters in recent years.
