SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ The federal government has awarded $1.2 million to two northern Indiana cities to help them redevelop old industrial sites.
South Bend and Plymouth are both receiving $600,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the brownfield redevelopment funding announced Thursday.
EPA Region 5 Administrator Susan Hedman says the funding “will help transform contaminated sites into redevelopment opportunities.''
Thursday's announcement was made at Ignition Park, a former brownfield site in South Bend that was cleaned up in 2011 and redeveloped with EPA funding.
South Bend and Plymouth are among 171 U.S. communities receiving 2014 brownfield grants from EPA to clean up contaminated properties and boost local economies by redeveloping former brownfield sites.
