Charges Filed in Starke County Slaying, Carjackings

KNOX, Ind. (AP) _ A prosecutor has filed charges including murder against a northern Indiana man accused of fatally beating his estranged wife, carjacking three vehicles and leading police on a chase through two counties.

Starke County Prosecutor Nick Bourff also filed one count of kidnapping and one count of carjacking against 57-year-old Gary Chavez of Knox on Wednesday.

Chavez is being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his face at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois.

WSBT-TV and WNDU-TV report a warrant for Chavez's arrest has been issued but not served because of his medical condition.

Chavez is quoted in a court document as telling one carjacking victim, “I killed my wife and I'm on the run.''

Fifty-year-old Kimberly Chavez of Portage was found dead at Gary Chavez's home on June 6.
