State Board Considers Curbing Ritz Agenda Power

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Members of the State Board of Education have narrowly decided to consider limiting Democratic Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz's ability to set the board's agenda.

The board voted 7-3 Wednesday afternoon to appoint a special committee that would consider new limits on her power. Ritz chairs the board, but has frequently found herself at odds with its members.

Fighting resumed recently between Ritz and Gov. Mike Pence's education staff and appointees over the state's efforts to maintain its federal No Child Left Behind waiver. Ritz and Pence's staff accused each other of jeopardizing the waiver.

The latest fighting follows conflicts within the board last fall. Ritz walked out of a meeting and sued other board members after they circumvented her on a key decision about the state's “A-F'' school grading system.
