Murder Charge after Indianapolis Officer Slain

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A prosecutor has filed a murder charge against an Indianapolis man in the fatal shooting of a police officer.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry said 25-year-old Major Davis Jr. was charged with murder Wednesday in the slaying Saturday night of Officer Perry Renn on the city's north side.

A probable cause affidavit says Davis opened fire on Renn with an AK-47 assault rifle owned by his mother, Cynthia Davis.

If convicted, Davis faces a sentence of 45 to 65 years. Curry has also filed a sentence enhancement request for the use of a firearm. That could increase the sentence by up to 20 years. Curry says it's too early to decide whether to seek the death penalty.

Davis remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Renn's funeral is scheduled for Friday.
