BEVERLY SHORES, Ind. (AP) _ The National Park Service will close a beach at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on Monday and Tuesday to clean up storm damage.

Supervisory Park Ranger Bruce Rowe tells The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1mcBQel ) that waves up to 11 feet high battered Central Avenue Beach during recent storms and exposed large pieces of concrete, pipes and other debris.

Park rangers suspect the debris was buried under the beach. When the storm waves crashed into the shore, they eroded the sand and unearthed the debris.

The National Lakeshore rarely closes its beaches. The last beach Rowe remembers closing was four or five years ago when a storm dragged debris out of Burns Harbor and onto a nearby beach.

The National Park Service expects to reopen Central Avenue Beach on Wednesday.
