Indianapolis Airport Display Honors Ex-namesake

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A new art project in the Indianapolis International Airport's passenger terminal is honoring the World War I flying ace for whom the airport was once named.

The display officially installed Wednesday depicts Col. Weir Cook, his World War I-era Spad fighter plane and moments in the airport's history.

Airport Authority deputy director Bob Duncan tells The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/1pYVuLT) that planners wanted the history display to be more prominent than just items hanging on the wall.

Cook played a role in bringing Indianapolis its first airport in 1931. The city's main airport was named for Cook after he died in a plane crash during World War II. The Cook name was dropped in the 1970s in favor of Indianapolis International.
