DUGGER, Ind. (AP) – Dozens of volunteers have been pitching in at a small southwestern Indiana town to keep its school doors open.
The Dugger Union Community School is set to start classes next week as a K-12 charter school in a community-led effort after the area's school board voted to consolidate it this year with other schools because of declining enrollment and revenue.
Parent Lisa Parr has been helping coordinate cleaning of the school. Parr tells the Tribune-Star the school will be “ready no matter what.”
Some 300 students are expected to attend the school in the town of Dugger, about 30 miles south of Terre Haute.
School administrator and football coach Danny Tieken tells the Sullivan Daily Times that school's football team has been helped by equipment donations from around the state.
