GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) _ A northern Indiana hospital is indefinitely restricting visits by children age 12 and younger because of a severe respiratory illness that has sickened hundreds of children nationwide.
IU Health Goshen Hospital on Wednesday immediately restricted the children from its maternity and pediatric units because of national and local outbreaks of enterovirus D68. It says the virus tends to be more severe in children and more likely to be transmitted by them.
It says children are allowed in other areas of the hospital about 20 miles southeast of South Bend.
The Indiana State Department of Health reported Monday that laboratory results show three people in northern Indiana recently tested positive for a virus similar to entovirus D68 but more testing was needed to confirm whether it was the same virus.
