INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Some Indianapolis police officers will soon start wearing body cameras as the department considers buying them for the entire 1,500-officer force.

Police Lt. Mark Wood tells The Indianapolis Star that at least six officers will use the cameras in a test beginning Dec. 15. The department plans a six-week test, after which officials will review how the cameras worked.

Officials say the cameras can cost between $800 and $1,200 each, along with maintenance and video storage costs. Equipping the entire force could have a total cost from $2 million to $3 million.

Indianapolis FOP vice president Rick Snyder tells WRTV the cameras can be a valuable tool but there are questions about when officers can turn them off and with privacy for the public.
