Fort Wayne Approves Expansion of Downtown Economic District

(Darrin Wright/WOWO News)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) The Downtown Fort Wayne economic improvement district is expanding by nearly 40 percent as it enters a new ten-year term of operation.

The expansion follows a successful reauthorization process that required approval from a majority of property owners within the district. The updated boundaries now include the Wells Street corridor and a significantly longer stretch of Broadway.

Under the new map, the district extends north to Elizabeth and Putnam streets and west to Taylor Street, marking a major geographic increase in coverage.

District officials say the ten-year renewal ensures continued funding for enhanced downtown services, including the “Clean & Green” maintenance program and ambassador services. The renewal runs through 2035.

Economic improvement districts are funded through property assessments and are designed to provide services beyond those offered by the city. Officials say the expansion reflects sustained development and investment in downtown Fort Wayne.
