SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ The Indiana public access counselor says in an advisory opinion that the University of Notre Dame has violated the state's public records law if it withheld police records requested by ESPN about possible campus crimes.
The South Bend Tribune reports Public Access Counselor Luke Britt said in an opinion Monday he expects private universities that have professional police forces to follow an opinion he wrote Oct. 31 saying they must observe Indiana's public records laws.
The university said Friday that it is complying with state law. It says three previous advisory opinions from the Office of Public Access Counselor agreed with the university that its police department and those of other private universities in Indiana are not public agencies. The statement says Indiana law has not changed.
