INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indiana Department of Revenue says its security measures helped save millions in fraudulent tax refunds last year. 

The agency says it stopped more than $88 million tax dollars from being stolen through identity theft and fraudulent tax returns. Approximately 74,000 fraudulent returns were identified out of the 2.2 million returns filed. 

The department said it plans to tighten security measures even more to prepare for the 2015 tax season that begins Jan. 20. Hoosier taxpayers should expect to see an identity confirmation quiz that helps verify their identities.
