INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – More than 4,100 people have registered their motorized scooters under an Indiana law designed to place tighter controls on the vehicles and increase safety.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/1aLP8j7 ) the majority of the registrations issued since the law took effect in January cover scooters with engines of 50 cubic centimeters or less.

The law requires owners of mopeds or scooters of that size to have a registration, a license plate and an Indiana identification card. They also must pass a test identifying street signs.  

Operators of bikes above 50 cubic centimeters must have a valid driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement or valid motorcycle learner's permit.

Operators pay a minimum of $36 in fees and excise taxes to register their bikes.
