INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The Indiana General Assembly has passed a resolution asking Congress to block a plan to build a tribal casino in South Bend.
The $480 million plan by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians calls for a new tribal village and casino. The band is seeking federal approval.
The Indiana legislature passed the resolution Tuesday by voice vote. It asks Congress to change a law to deny gaming authority for Native American tribes that live on reservations or restored lands in Indiana.
Republican state Sen. Carlin Yoder of Middlebury co-sponsored the resolution, and he says he doesn't necessarily oppose a tribal casino, but that it should abide by the same regulations and taxes as the state's commercial casinos.
The South Bend Common Council has voiced its support for the casino project.
