INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A new exhibit that showcases some of the over-the-top hats Dr. Seuss author Theodore Geisel spent decades collecting is coming to Indianapolis.

The striped red-and-white top hat worn by the cat in Geisel's “The Cat in the Hat'' is his most famous hat.

But The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/1Idd0J0 ) the free exhibit authorized by Geisel's widow highlights his eye for outrageous, multicolored hats festooned with plumage and adornments.

Geisel created some of the hats himself, but he added others to the collection he began amassing in the 1930s.

“The Hats Off to Dr. Seuss!'' exhibit is traveling in a steamer trunk that will open to the public May 15 at the J.S. Yopp Gallery at Indianapolis' Fashion Mall at Keystone. 

The show runs through June 1.
