EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) – A new law will allow the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles to suspend the license plates of motorists who fail to pay tolls on a new Cline Avenue Bridge in East Chicago that will be built by a private company.

The Times of Munster reports (http://bit.ly/1JOAu9o ) a bill passed by the Legislature and signed into law Monday also allows United Bridge Partners free access to BMV registration records.

The company said the records are needed because they plan to use open-road tolling with no manned toll booths. Company officials say motorists who cross the bridge without an E-ZPass or I-PASS electronic transponder will be mailed a bill.

Construction on the $158 million bridge is expected to start in late spring.
