Sierra Club: Notre Dame’s Plan to Cut Coal Use Good 1st Step

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ A Sierra Club spokeswoman says she hopes the University of Notre Dame will follow up its plan to stop burning coal within five years by urging the utility that provides half of its power to follow that lead.

The Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign Indiana representative Jodi Perras (PEHR'-ihs) says Notre Dame on Monday became the 35th university nationwide since 2012 to announce plans to phase out on-campus coal-burning plants. Twenty-seven other universities also have them.

Notre Dame said it generates about 50 percent of its electrical energy needs with the other half coming from Indiana Michigan Power Co.

Indiana Michigan spokesman Tracy Warner says it has been working to reduce its use of coal and that more than 50 percent of its generating capacity comes from carbon-free emission sources.
