ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) — Efforts are under way in central Indiana to convert an historic railroad trestle into a pedestrian bridge.

The Anderson Board of Public Works her approved a nearly $150,000 contract with the Indiana Department of Transportation for the project. It would convert the landmark iron bridge that passed over the White River for decades. All that remains of the bridge are steel girders and some wooden crossbeams.

The city will pay for 20 percent of the project with food and beverage tax revenues. The rest will come from the federal government.

Converting the bridge will let the city link trail systems on the south and north sides of the river. Design work should be done next year. There's no timetable to finish the project.
