West Point cadets head to Indiana for fellow cadet’s funeral

CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP): Dozens of West Point cadets are expected to travel to northern Indiana this week for the funeral of a fellow cadet killed during training exercises at Fort Hood, Texas.

Between 75 and 90 West Point cadets will attend Saturday’s funeral at Chesterton High School for fellow cadet Mitchell Winey. The 21-year-old Valparaiso native died June 2 after an Army transport truck he was riding in was washed away in a rain-swollen creek in Texas.

Eight other soldiers were killed when the truck overturned.

John Swibes of Chesterton is helping arrange housing for the cadets who will attend Winey’s funeral. He tells The (Munster) Times there’s been “a huge outpouring from the community.

Winey was due to graduate with the U.S. Military Academy at West Point Class of 2018.
