JASPER, Ind. (AP) – A Veterans of Foreign Wars post in southern Indiana that’s seen its membership plunge is being sold after more than seven decades.

Jasper’s VFW Post 673 had nearly 1,200 members after World War II, but that’s dwindled to about 430 as fewer servicemen join and older veterans pass away. Post member Paul Striegel says the group’s membership now has an average age of 70 and only 28 of the members served in World War II.

Post Commander Dan Beck tells The (Jasper) Herald that the decision to put the post up for sale was difficult, but the group needs to find a smaller location.

The post on Jasper’s north side has been a fixture for more than 70 years in the small city about 40 miles northeast of Evansville.
