SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Officials in South Bend say that flooding that hit last month caused an estimated $500,000 worth of damage to city infrastructure.

The Department of Public Works says that includes damage to streets, spillways, culverts and basins. The South Bend Tribune reports that the department has requested more money from the county option income tax fund to pay for fixing the damage.

City engineer Corbitt Kerr says the city has a “short window” to get the work done before asphalt plants close for the season.

Federal officials say more than 80 property owners have applied for disaster relief loans. The deadline to apply for physical property damage is Nov. 1. State grants are available for those rejected for loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
