Indiana Michigan Power offers rebates for “smart” thermostat installations

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Would you let your electric company take over your thermostat?

That’s the proposal Indiana Michigan Power is making of its customers. The Journal Gazette reports the idea is to ask you to install a “smart thermostat” in your home, which can be controlled through an app on your smartphone.

Those aren’t new, they’ve been around a while. The hook is I&M wants the ability to control the temperature inside your home during “peak usage events,” like particularly hot summer days. The utility says they’ll still ask your permission before making any tweaks and you can still say “no,” but if you say “yes” you’ll get a bill credit.

They’re also offering up to $100 for you to buy one of the special thermostats, and another $125 rebate for installation.
