Slocum Apartments plan approved amid opposition

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A proposal to turn the former Francis Slocum Elementary School into low-income housing has been approved, but not without some loud objections.

A small group of residents against the project had to be told to quiet down by the Chairwoman of the Fort Wayne Plan Commission yesterday, as the group approved a plan by Keller Development and Brightpoint to develop the building into 40 or so “affordable housing” units.

The Journal Gazette reports those against the move cited concerns about dropping property values, as well as a belief that low-income residents will bring crime and drugs to the neighborhood.

The Commission’s attorney says due to the way the land had been zoned, the Commission couldn’t legally deny the plan even if they wanted to.
