EACS, ACLU settle lawsuit

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A lawsuit over East Allen County Schools’ alleged bias against an LGBTQ student club has been settled.

The American Civil Liberties Union had sued the district on behalf of the Leo Pride Alliance in November 2018 over allegations that district officials insisted the club not use the phrase “gay straight alliance” in its name and that a list of every club member’s name be provided to faculty. The lawsuit was based on the grounds that the district violated the students’ First Amendment Rights.

EACS agreed to allow the club to change its name to Leo GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) but denies any wrongdoing.

As a result of the settlement, the lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice.
