INDIANA, (WOWO) – The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is now offering a non-specific gender option for residents.

Hoosiers can be marked as an “X” on their driver’s license or state ID card.  The option is being made available for those who identify as neither male or female.

The BMV says they’re offering the third gender option based on credential standards recommended by the American Academy of Motor Vehicle Administrators.

The Northwest Indiana Times reports to request the “X” designation, applicants will need to present a certified, amended birth certificate that attests to the gender change or a signed, dated physician’s statement confirming a permanent gender change.

At least five other states in the U.S. offer a non-binary options on driver’s licenses.
