Bike Crash Kills 9-Year-Old Western Indiana Girl

BROOKVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ Authorities have identified a western Indiana girl as the victim of a fatal bicycle accident at a state recreation area.

Lt. Bill Browne of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources says the Saturday accident at Mounds State Recreation Area near Brookville killed Carly Rice of Clinton. She died about noon Saturday after being airlifted to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Browne says she was rapidly cycling down a paved incline when she tried to slow down by using her feet instead of the bicycle's brakes. The bicycle went off the road and struck a ditch, causing the girl's neck and throat to strike the bike's handlebars. She wasn't wearing a helmet.

Browne says the girl was with relatives at the time.

Clinton is about 70 miles west of Indianapolis.
