Bitter temps causing difficulty for road crews

(Saige Driver / 1190 WOWO)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Today’s arctic temperatures aren’t helping road crews.

While crews were out applying road salt and plowing roads over the weekend, anything they didn’t get ended up freezing on the roads, mostly side streets. And it won’t be melting, even with salt, according to INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness:

“When the air and surface temperatures get below a certain level, the materials we put down are useless. The only thing that works is the blade of a snow plow, but if the snow is moved and all we’re dealing with is ice, that really doesn’t help us (either).”

The forecast for tonight calls for a low temperature of 1 below zero, with wind chills today as low as -20. Tomorrow will feel much warmer, with a high just above freezing at 35.
