Central Indiana Town Honors 3 Killed in House Fire

NINEVEH, Ind. (AP): A central Indiana man is remembering his wife as a hero for going back into their burning apartment to try and save the lives of their two young children.

About 100 people gathered around Chris Abbott and his surviving 5-year-old daughter during a vigil Sunday near the house in the Johnson County town of Nineveh where Serina Slusher-Abbott and the couple's 6-month-old and 18-month-old children were fatally injured Nov. 22.

Abbott told reporters his wife did what any mother should do in trying to rescue the children trapped inside.

Abbott was at work when the fire broke out, but arrived back home to find their second-floor apartment engulfed in flames.

Abbott says his surviving daughter hasn't yet been able to talk about the fire.
