KOKOMO, Ind. (AP): A ceremony is planned for next week to name a Kokomo bridge in honor of a sheriff’s deputy who was fatally wounded in a shootout earlier this year.

The span over Wildcat Creek will be named Carl A. Koontz Memorial Bridge under a resolution approved by Howard County commissioners.

Koontz was shot March 20 in nearby Russiaville while trying to arrest a 25-year-old man who was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

County Commissioner Paul Wyman tells the Kokomo Tribune the bridge naming will be a constant reminder to the community about Koontz’s ultimate sacrifice.

The dedication is set for 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at the bridge near the sheriff’s department offices.
