NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) _ Officials in a southern Indiana city are questioning whether a local utility really needed to clear-cut a gash through a scenic hillside for a power line project.
 
Crews for Louisville-based LG&E recently cut a 200-foot swath through the Floyds Knobs area for the power line and substation project.
 
The utility says the work was unavoidable. But nearby area residents and officials in the Ohio River city of New Albany say the trees' destruction was inexcusable.
 
New Albany building commissioner David Brewer tells The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., he doesn't believe LG&E needed to fell “that many trees to put up power lines.''
 
Mayor Jeff Gahan plans to file a complaint with Indiana regulators. He says the project doesn't appear to have met construction and development standards.
