Closing Statements Due In Man Accused In 2012 Home Explosion

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Jurors are scheduled to hear closing statements in the trial of a man accused of planning a home explosion that gutted an Indianapolis subdivision in 2012 and killed a couple living in a neighboring house.

St. Joseph Superior Court Judge John Marnocha told jurors in South Bend last week they would hear closing arguments on Monday and will begin deliberating the fate of Mark Leonard on Tuesday. Leonard faces 53 counts, including charges of murder, arson, conspiracy to commit arson and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.

The jurors heard from more than 160 witnesses for the prosecution during the monthlong trial and just one witness for the defense last Thursday. Leonard's public defender, Diane Black, said in her opening statement that her client only intended to start a small fire.
