INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Officers mourning an Indianapolis police officer slain while trying to save a woman being held at gunpoint are taking comfort in the knowledge that he died during a selfless act.

Police spokesman Lt. Chris Bailey says fellow officers are comforted a bit knowing Officer Rod Bradway died “doing what he wanted to do, and doing it in a heroic way for a perfect stranger.”

The 41-year-old father of two kicked his way into an Indianapolis apartment early Friday when a woman who'd been held at gunpoint for three hours by her ex-boyfriend began screaming for help. The woman and her child were unharmed, but the ex-boyfriend allegedly fatally shot Bradway.

Officers from across Indiana and the nation are expected to attend Thursday's funeral for Bradway at Indianapolis' Bankers Life Fieldhouse
