COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WOWO) — Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel will sign a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month during a ceremony next month.
The proclamation signing is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Whitley County Courthouse gazebo, 101 W. Van Buren St. in Columbia City.
YWCA Northeast Indiana says Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed each October to raise awareness about domestic violence, recognize survivors and connect people with available resources. The observance began in 1981 as a national “Day of Unity.”
According to information provided by YWCA Northeast Indiana, about 42.5% of women and 28% of men in Indiana experience intimate partner physical violence, sexual violence or stalking during their lifetimes. The organization says 100 domestic violence-related fatalities were recorded across Indiana in 2025.
YWCA Northeast Indiana serves six counties, including Whitley County, and provides advocacy, education and support services for people affected by violence, trauma and addiction.
