SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ The South Bend International Airport could begin living up to its name next year when it comes to commercial flights.
The South Bend Tribune reports the St. Joseph County Airport Authority board on Thursday awarded a $9 million contract to Ziolkowski Construction Inc. of South Bend to build a federal inspection station, otherwise known as border customs. The board also voted to hire the project's design firm Mead & Hunt Inc. at nearly $1 million to manage construction.
A 2012-2013 airport study showed about 70 internationally registered private aircraft flew into South Bend during a 12-month period. That doesn't include U.S.-registered aircraft belonging to regional companies which do international business. But the airport also hopes to add international commercial flights.
No date has been set to start construction.
