Coroner IDs West Lafayette Fire victim as Man, 22

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): A coroner has identified a man found dead in the fire-gutted ruins of a West Lafayette apartment building as a 22-year-old eastern Indiana man.

Tippecanoe County Coroner Donna Avolt identified the fire victim on Saturday as Cody Ryan Day of Connersville. She says preliminary autopsy findings suggest Day died from respiratory arrest due to soot inhalation in the superheated air inside the apartment. His death was ruled an accident.

Avolt says Day had been visiting friends at the time of Thursday's pre-dawn fire on the edge of the Purdue University campus.

Day's body was found after the fire gutted several apartments in a building where many Purdue students live.

The Journal & Courier reports Purdue records show that Day, a Connersville High School graduate, was not enrolled at Purdue.
